Russian President Putin starts 5th term | NHK WORLD-JAPAN News

Russian President Vladimir Putin was sworn in for his fifth term on Tuesday. The term will run through 2030.

Putin took the oath of office in an inauguration ceremony at the Kremlin.

He thanked Russian troops in Ukraine, saying: “We stand as a united and great nation. Together we will overcome all obstacles and ensure that everything we conceive becomes reality. Together we win!”

The widow of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny posted a message on social media.

Yulia Navalnaya said: “Our country is currently being led by a liar, a thief and a murderer, but this will come to an end. Don’t give up. Truth will prevail.”

Putin is scheduled to hold a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council on Wednesday with leaders of former Soviet republics.

He will also take part in a Victory Day ceremony on Thursday to commemorate the former Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany in World War Two.

Putin is expected to call attention to Russia’s cooperation with friendly countries and to push for national unity amid deepening rifts with Western nations over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
