  • 2.15: Handicap Hurdle – Hill Of Tara 8/11 (NB – 2pts)

Hill Of Tara

You’d be forgiven for being sceptical of backing this horse after a hefty rise in the weights to the tune of 15lb for his latest win at Hereford.

Gaining two quick wins over 3m and beyond in the space of a few days and the handicapper has certainly caught up with him now, but it still shouldn’t be enough to prevent the hattrick.

Hasty Parisian and San Pedro will be the only rivals realistically and it’s hard to see the six-year-old bounce back having not won since March 2022.

It’s frustrating too as he’s put in some really impressive place efforts in behind top-class horses but has only once found the winners’ enclosure from 18 starts.

Hill Of Tara on the other hand is in incredible form and looking to be thriving since switched to softer ground and stamina testing distances.

HMS President is the big favourite here but a far too short a price to go for here considering he’s making the switch at seven-years-old to hurdles having had a great career on the flat.

While he has a mark of 101, he’s only actually won three times on the turf and that’s out of a total of 31 total races.

Though his form in summer of 2023 was potentially his best yet, with a close second at Royal Ascot and a Class 2 win at Newmarket.

However, there’s not been much support in the market for his hurdle debut and Koenigsstern looks the best bet.

He’s had three hurdle attempts so far, the first being 30 lengths behind Gidleigh Park at Exeter in November, the second a decent fourth at Plumpton and his third, despite being 16/1, was less than two lengths off the winner at Warwick behind Donnacha and Klitschko.

That’s decent form for a novice hurdler and comes into this with much stronger chances and experience.

Tap N Go Leo

Placed third behind Diamond Ri at Warwick in a decent running of a Class 2 maiden hurdle in January.

That form has been boosted quite well and considering it was his first go over hurdles, it’s even more promising and exactly why he’s odds-on to beat this field today.

He was far ahead of Tedley that day too who has since gone on to be second behind Willsburg off a mark of 116, which is more than Micro Millions is currently at.

Purely off the marks on paper Tap N Go Leo should have this easily provided the heavy ground is no concern – though the going was incredibly soft at Warwick last month.

He wasn’t too far off Diamond Ri, the winner of his debut race, who has since gone on to achieve a mark of 131 and had previously gone close himself to the likes of Insurrection at Exeter in November, so it’s all the more encouraging for this Jonjo O’Neill horse.

This Jamie Snowden-trained horse is a surprising price at 7/2, very much a value bet for Monday.

Comes up against a variety of hurdlers here including a couple of mares, but a few have looked to have reached their top limit in terms of mark.

Whereas this six-year-old is still very much improving and has a lot of potential.

The grey was sent into a highly competitive Class 2 last year featuring the likes of Under Control, Iberico Lord, General Medrano and Beau Balko.

Has come one well since then too and should be a handy mark off 119 after a decent enough fourth behind Santos Blue in a Class 3 last month, having won well at Ffos Las in December. All signs point to further improvement this season and this looks a weaker race to take advantage on, on favourable conditions.

In incredible form this season over fences for Gary Moore including an eight length victory at Sandown, beating Fine Casting, Mount Tempest and General Medrano.

That was an impressive display despite being given plenty of weight and now sets the standard here on ideal ground having won on this course before.
